Is the good way to remove silver tarnish?

I have some 10oz silver bars. Tried the method of using
toothpaste to rub it off, but this is hard.

I've also tried put the bar on the gas range and just heat
it up to a nice orange color for a few minutes. Then I cool it
fast with tap water. I find that I get a very nice, real white piece
of silver bar. No tarnish. But it seemed to lost some of its reflective
shine. Is this good? :no_ma:

Never heard of those two methods.

There is a simple technique in which you simply heat a pot full of water, aluminum foil, baking soda, and silver. I've tried it and it takes the tarnish off very quickly, while leaving all of the silver intact. For the exact recipe, just look it up on Google.

e Z est works great, I've cleaned up a bunch of rounds before I give them away as gifts.

this is like obsessively cleaning your gun when you havent used it. whats the point, it doesnt affect the value.

on the other hand, why not get them shiny? two bars to choose from, i'll take the one that looks decent. dip 'em, dry 'em and seal 'em up. coin collecting has always been as much of a hobby as an investment. if the metals go down instead of up, perhaps a coin dealer might buy a good looking bar over a p.o.s. one because he'll have an edge in selling it quicker. just a thought

You're never supposed to clean numismatic coins but my understanding is that dip cleaning bullion in silver cleaner is acceptable. I only buy bullion so I dip clean mine if it's pretty tarnished. I never rub or polish on it though. I just dip in silver cleaner, rinse with warm water, pat dry by placing it between two towels for a bit then put it up.

Anything that removes tarnish is going to change the appearance. The baking soda method leaves the finish white, and it will tarnish again very easily. Toothpaste, or any abrasive, leaves fine scratches so it looks frosty. Polishing makes it look like it was polished.

Why bother? You bought silver, it's still silver. Get some desiccant at the hardware store and seal it in a bag with your silver and it won't tarnish (much). Once it has tarnished, leave it alone. Some people like tarnish and everybody else doesn't care.

If you just want to polish something, polish your sterling silverware.

I think you can dip them in some amonia and rinse well under running water to clean em up.
